Ok where to start with Running Headphones, There are sub categories at play and I have tried to sumarise each of these to list the pro's and cons of each type this will let you identify the running Headphone likley to suit you best.
There is one thing that all Running headphones share and that is the ability to stay put and deal with moisture (Sweat)
Not always considered the best option for runners due to their ability to work loose as you run and to block outside noise which is a serious safety consideration when out pounding on a road. There are some notable exceptions to this including custom fit earplugs which are expensive options but are a superb addition to "in ear headphones".
This group of headphones are often considered as the best headphones for the Gym environment and are often called Sports hook earphones or sometimes Sports earphones.
Generaly considered better value for the runner, They tend to resist moisture well, give awareness of your surroundings and tend to stay put. There are however two sub groups
Sports Hook Earphones - Do what it say's in the description
And
Neckband Earphones- Earbuds held in your ear by a flexible band which either fits over the head or round the neck.
More recognisable as a conventional headphone , generaly considered as having the better audio quality than other running headphones. They generally have open backs which allow for environmental awareness.
On the downside some consider them to be a touch too intrusive for running but on the other hand many runners do use them.
